Just like they once did on the playgrounds of famed streetball courts, the best players are rewarded with stylish nicknames reflecting their game or their personality. This regular column takes a look at some of the best monikers in the League and how they were earned.
Nickname: ‘Iso Joe’
Player: Joe Johnson (Shooting guard, Houston Rockets)
The Story: The newest member of the Houston Rockets has one of the most feared one-on-one games in the League. Joe Johnson has an uncanny ability to get off his shot against any defender, despite his run-of-the-mill athletic abilities. With his combination of footwork, handles and fakes, he has turned himself into a seven-time NBA All-Star, and coaches are still calling clear-outs for him to work his magic even in his mid-thirties.
As a youngster coming into the NBA from defensive-minded Arkansas, the 6-foot-7 swingman built his reputation on his ability to put the ball through the basket. After being traded by his first professional team, the Boston Celtics, Johnson experienced a breakthrough in Phoenix playing for the ‘7 Seconds or Less’ Suns led by Mike D’Antoni and Steve Nash, where his offensive ability was put on display in their fast-paced offense.
Over the years, Johnson has established himself as an outstanding performer in the clutch. When the clock winds down, ‘Iso Joe’ finds the ball in his hands more often than just about any player in the League. More often than not, he finds a way to get a good shot off and into the basket. Despite his quiet demeanor, his game speaks volumes about his ability as he delivers for his teams time and time again. The red-hot Houston Rockets will be counting on his ageless gifts for creating his own shot as they chase championship glory.
