An Introduction to NBA Memorabilia

Toys for kids and adults alike

Just as basketball has gotten more sophisticated over the decades, NBA memorabilia has become more varied and innovative. The memorabilia industry is a thriving market that caters to NBA fans of all ages and interests. There is a particularly impressive range of figurines, from those serving as toys to collectors’ items with a high resale value.

In the past, these figurines were largely simplistic, in the mold of the toys from Starting Lineup, Mattel or Corinthian. Today, Enterbay produces hyper-realistic miniatures of the best NBA players, with movable parts and interchangeable components such as jerseys and shoes. The shoes are a true sneakerhead’s dream, with accurate details right down to the size and design of the shoebox. Only true cultural icons get their own Enterbay figure, with this honor being extended to legends  such as Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson and Anfernee ‘Penny’ Hardaway.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are still toys such as those from C3, akin to the vintage ones from Lego. These have buildable components and even feature lockers with headphones and arenas with deck chairs and NBA decals. McFarlane’s figurines bridge the gap between replication and affordability, with timely series that promote the NBA’s superstars as well as its up-and-comers.

Vinyl figurines are a trend on the rise, and this applies to basketball as well. The extensive Funko Pop range now features players from Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid to LeBron James and Kevin Durant. With their trademark oversized heads and miniature bodies, these are reminiscent of the bobbleheads that are still popular today. There are other stylized versions of these vinyl figures, such as the ones from MINDstyle, providing a dash of creativity to your collection.
